Iran’s pro-democracy movement was able to harness the power of Twitter to mobilize support for their protests against electoral fraud. Now activists are using the micro-blogging tool to give Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad an extra-special welcome to New York City.
The Iranian president is in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly, and he’s scheduled to make a big speech Wednesday. But supporters of Iran’s embattled pro-democracy movement are planning to light up the city with green — the signature color of the opposition — during Ahmadinejad’s visit.
The idea, fittingly enough, first came up on Twitter when users @redcrossmomand @zorinsmom started exchanging messages regarding Ahmadinejad’s visit to the UN and what people could do to protest.
