The sounds of bees buzzing, hornets hovering, and angry mobs hissing…

When my sister Margie(5) and I (4), accidently knocked down a beehive in our grandmother’s back yard, we didn’t really learn a lesson. We just paid the price fate deals out. The hive was in a tree one moment, and then at our feet the next, with angry buzzing bees showing their displeasure by stinging us repeatedly. It’s a miracle we didn’t go into shock and die.

Our grandmother ran out and picked us both up and took us inside the house. She put us in a hot tub and dabbed baking soda onto all of those red spots all over our bodies. That was the treatment for getting stung back then.

When I was ten, my buddy and I knocked down a hornet’s mud nest under the eves of his house. I was going to help him paint when we saw the nest. I don’t know what we were thinking, because we took sticks and poked at it! The ominous sound of hundreds of wings preceded the attack!

We learned a lesson that day. You can’t outrun hornets. We proved that. Once we stopped running down the street two blocks later, we took inventory of our stings. Both of us were rapidly growing some nice lumps on our faces and exposed arms. We went to my house and found a box of baking soda, and liberally applied it to the welts.

And here I am years later, still poking at hornet’s nests by taking on the NRA, the gun lobby, and a bunch of very scared Americans who are sure their 2nd Amendment rights will be violated with ANY kind of gun laws. My column “Let’s face it, no one will take the high road to gun control” brought out a swarm of protests on the T-S Online Forum.

The lesson I learned this time was intolerance. Pro NRA blogs spouted like deadly mushrooms when they got hold of my column. There were over twenty Pro Gun/NRA sites carrying my column (pardon me if I don’t give you the links) at last count this morning. Those NRA folk rally pretty quick if they sense anyone daring to challenge them. To get a good idea of their mindsets just Google some of those sites. Talk about scary.

I noticed the majority of those sites came from the deep south, and Texas. NOT ALL OF THEM, just the majority. What I did was poke at the NRA Hives in those areas. The hatred coming from there is thick enough to cut with a knife.

This time there doesn’t seem to be a remedy. The NRA isn’t ever going to be seriously challenged. Money talks and morals walk. People continue to stockpile weapons in preparation for the coming chaos, and to make money the good old capitalistic way.
