Stewart announces Rally to Restore Sanity, Colbert’s got March to Keep Fear Alive

Jon Stewart announced Thursday on “The Daily Show” that he would be holding the Rally to Restore Sanity. The event will be held on the National Mall in Washington, DC October 30. According to the official website:

We’re looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn’t be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it’s appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles.

Not to be outdone, Stephen Colbert has announced his own rally, March to Keep Fear Alive, for the exact same time, date, and place. That event’s site claims:

They want to replace our Fear with reason. But never forget — “Reason” is just one letter away from “Treason.” Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can’t afford to take that chance.

The two events come as a response to Glenn Beck’s August 28th Restoring Honor rally, which brought thousands of conspiracy theorists and racist whack jobs out to celebrate God and military.

This whole thing seems to have started when Reddit user mrsammercer opened a discussion thread entitled “I’ve had a vision and I can’t shake it: Colbert needs to hold a satirical rally in DC” on August 31. The Reddit community got behind the idea, and drew Colbert’s attention by raising over $200 000 for his charity, DonorsChoose.org.
