I didn’t need to see a poll to know that Americans are disgusted with the current crop of presidential candidates (from both parties). Nevertheless, this poll accurately reflects what we think about our leaders and lawmakers.
A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds a nation more downbeat, more dissatisfied with its political leadership and more concerned about the country's direction than at almost any other point in modern times.
By wide margins, those surveyed say the election process isn't working and the candidates aren't coming up with good ideas to solve the nation's problems.
Fewer than half say there is any candidate running, Republican or Democratic, who would make a good president.

"We're looking at the politics of backlash," says Lawrence Jacobs of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota. Americans see a political process that is "out of touch and paralyzed in the face of crushing economic conditions and fear about the future. It's as if the country is on the Titanic and it's going down, and you've got Congress and the presidential field playing violins."
