Blunt Stunt: Republican senator’s attempt to take women’s rights away fails

Here’s what happened yesterday:

“The Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, shorthanded as "the conscience amendment" and authored by Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., was "tabled," or set aside, on a 51-48 vote.” (source)

The amendment was a bold attempt by the Republicans to push their retro agenda of taking away a woman’s right to her own body. Look for more attempts like this also backed by the increasingly political Catholic Church.

 “Obama's policy decision was rewritten last month under pressure from Catholic bishops and others. It now requires health insurers to cover birth control for employees even of religiously affiliated institutions whose beliefs conflict with contraception. As part of his original health care overhaul, the policy required employers providing health care insurance to their workers to cover contraceptives.” (source)

Meanwhile, Saint Santorum, and his Catholic buddies are claiming that insurers having to cover birth control are having their religious freedom violated. Make no mistake on what’s happening here:

Republican leaders, not just Saint Santorum, are groveling under political pressure from the Catholic Church and are trying to turn the clock back on women’s access to birth control.  

If Blunt’s Bill had passed, employers would have been able to exclude coverage for any conditions they found to be religiously or morally objectionable.

If Blunt’s Bill had passed who would have been next on this “Godly Hit List” to lose insurance coverage?

That’s RIGHT (pun intended), sinners who have HIV & AIDS. But why stop there? This is all being done in the name of religious freedom, so they can also deny coverage to people with mental health issues, hemophilia, and STDs. Heck their could deny anyone that didn’t agree with their religion.

Blunt lost this time.

However, don’t expect this to be the last attempt by the Catholic Church to exert control in our secular government.

The Church has become a power player in politics with it’s own agendas – and special puppet Sanctimonious Ricky - this election year.
