Note to Paul Ryan: Pick a Favorite Band that Doesn’t Hate You!

Ah, the perils of being The Man — everything cool exists to protest your existence, and, unless you can play the saxophone or break dance, nothing you do will ever be cool. Paul Ryan's learning this the hard way, as Tom Morello, a founding member of Rage Against the Machine (who Ryan says is his favorite band) wrote an op-ed calling Ryan, among other things, "embodiment of the machine that our music has been raging against for two decades." Maybe Morello should change the band's name to Rage Against Paul Ryan.

The piece, available in all its delicious, scorching glory on Rolling Stone's website, laments the fact that Ryan doesn't understand the music of Rage, in much the same way Charles Manson misinterpreted the music of the Beatles. The whole thing is pretty Rage-tacular, but the juiciest bit is here:

I wonder what Ryan's favorite Rage song is? Is it the one where we condemn the genocide of Native Americans? The one lambasting American imperialism? Our cover of "Fuck the Police"? Or is it the one where we call on the people to seize the means of production? So many excellent choices to jam out to at Young Republican meetings!

Don't mistake me, I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta "rage" in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions.

Morello concludes that he wishes Ryan would mosh less and listen more, that he hopes Ryan is a mole who is faking his way into Washington to fuck shit up once he gets there. (source)
